On April 3, 2025, the specialized privacy-focused distribution Tails 6.14.1 was released, based on the Debian 12 package base and featuring the GNOME 43 desktop environment, designed for anonymous internet access. The Tails 6.0 release occurred in February 2023, and Tails 6.13 was released in early March. Tails is a continuation of the development of the Incognito operating system. The first distribution of the project was released in June 2009. In Tails, all outgoing connections are routed through the Tor network, while all non-anonymous connections are blocked. The Tails system is intended to be run from a LiveCD or LiveUSB and does not leave traces on the PC where it is used. User data is stored using encryption. An ISO image of the Tails distribution, sized at 1 GB, is available for download. The release of Tails 6.14.1 was quickly assembled by the project team instead of version 6.14, as a serious issue was discovered during the initial testing of the new branch prior to the publication of the builds, necessitating a re-release to fix the problem.

Fixes and improvements in Tails 6.14.1 include:
  • Resolved previously identified bugs and issues;
  • Tor Browser updated to version 14.0.9, and the Tor package to 0.4.8.16;
  • The Tor Browser header has been restored with buttons for minimizing and maximizing the window;
  • The AppArmor profile used for protection against vulnerabilities in Tor Browser has been redesigned. Previously, the browser was granted read access only to specific directories and write access only to the directory for saving downloaded files. In the new version, such restrictions have been removed from the AppArmor profile for Tor Browser. Instead, the xdg-desktop-portal package, used in Flatpak for controlled selective access to files outside the isolated environment, has been implemented. This change allows for secure access to any subdirectories in the home directory and in Persistent Storage.
