Inexperienced users of the messaging app are being intimidated with account block threats.
- The user receives a message supposedly from a support representative. The message states that a request to delete their account has been submitted in their name - to cancel it, they need to provide a code from an SMS message.
- The scammer then sends a link that leads to a fake website mimicking Telegram or another popular service. The victim is prompted to enter their phone number and go through an authorization process.
- When the victim enters their number, they receive an SMS with a one-time code. The scammers immediately see this code, delete the conversation and block the deceived user.
- The obtained data can be used maliciously: accessing the victim's online banking account to withdraw money or apply for loans.
- Telegram support never contacts users about account block threats. It's impossible to create a "request to delete a profile" in the app.
- Genuine representatives of large companies never ask users to disclose one-time codes from SMS messages.
- Companies don't reach out to clients via messaging apps or send links to third-party resources.
